In May 2025, the global woodworking machinery industry turned its attention to Hanover, Germany. On the occasion of LIGNA‑World’s Leading Trade Fair for Woodworking, the Dalingshan Woodworking Machinery Chamber of Commerce of Dongguan took part in relevant international exchange activities as part of the industry delegation. Its docking sessions with African forestry industry representatives drew wide attention from member enterprises. Through these events, the Chamber aims to help its members understand shifts in the global market landscape and explore new spaces for industrial cooperation.

As one of the world’s most influential professional exhibitions for the woodworking machinery sector, LIGNA gathers equipment and solution suppliers from across the globe. It is nothing new for Chinese woodworking machinery manufacturers to attend such fairs. Quite a number of equipment enterprises based in Dalingshan have expanded their products worldwide by participating in exhibitions time and again. This time, however, the Chamber shifted its focus: beyond products and technologies, it placed greater emphasis on identifying potential markets and real‑world demands.

During discussions with African forestry representatives, the Chamber learned that Africa is endowed with abundant forest resources. Many African countries are promoting local timber‑processing industries to raise added value, which is driving growing demand for woodworking machinery. Compared with mature markets, the African market shows distinct characteristics. On one hand, its local wood‑processing foundation remains relatively weak, and there is strong demand for cost‑effective, easy‑to‑adapt machinery with reasonable investment thresholds. On the other hand, local industrial supporting facilities are insufficient. Local clients require not only machinery, but also technical training, process guidance and long‑term after‑sales support.

These market features complement the strengths of Dalingshan’s woodworking‑machinery industry. With over 30‑years of development, local manufacturers have built solid expertise in product cost‑performance, process adaptability and turn‑key plant planning. They are capable of delivering tailored equipment solutions for diverse timber species and different production scales. During exchanges, Chamber representatives introduced the industrial development of Dalingshan and shared member enterprises’ practices in customized equipment and responsive services. Both sides held preliminary talks regarding future mutual site visits and supply‑demand matching.

"When venturing into overseas markets, the biggest risk is insufficient understanding of local realities," said a Chamber official. Woodworking machinery is typical solution‑oriented equipment. Identical machines may deliver vastly different performance when processing different timber types, applying varied craft workflows or operated under local work habits. By organizing such international exchanges, the Chamber hopes members can gain thorough insights before going global and avoid blind investment.

Driven by the Belt and Road Initiative, forestry and timber‑processing cooperation between China and Africa has deepened in recent years. Many African nations intend to shift from log exports toward local deep‑processing, creating massive demand for technologies, equipment and management expertise. This represents great opportunities for Dalingshan woodworking‑machinery enterprises. Meanwhile, companies must stay sober‑minded: international markets follow different competition rules, service standards and cultural contexts. Enterprises can hardly gain a firm foothold without long‑term strategic preparation.

This participation also marks a concrete practice of the Chamber’s service mandate. Since its founding, the Chamber has adhered to the mission of "collaborative development and standardized win‑win outcomes", supporting members by building market platforms and sharing technical information. Arranging participation in domestic and overseas exhibitions and exchange events provides enterprises with extra channels for information access and resource docking.

According to the Chamber, special‑purpose overseas investigation tours will be organized subject to member intentions to translate exchange outcomes into tangible cooperative projects. The Chamber will continue to strengthen linkages with industry associations in other regions, collect up‑to‑date overseas‑market intelligence and assist members in navigating complex international environments.

Rooted in Dalingshan while facing the whole world, the Dalingshan Woodworking Machinery Chamber of Commerce will keep acting as a bridge. It will support member enterprises to advance steadily on the path of internationalization and help build a positive reputation for Chinese woodworking machinery in more countries and regions.
